Common questions
Can my switchboard handle a home charger?
We check capacity first. If the board needs upgrading we tell you before booking the install, not after, and the switchboard work goes in the same quote.
Do you supply the charger, or do I?
Either. We can supply a charger or install one you've already bought, provided it's compliant.
Can you run the cable to a car parked on the street?
Sometimes, depending on the property and any council permit needed for a footpath crossing. We'll tell you what's involved before quoting.
How fast will it charge?
That comes down to what supply the property has. A normal single phase house runs a charger up to around 7kW, which for most people adds more range overnight than a day's driving uses. Three phase supports considerably faster charging, but only if the property already has it or the supply is upgraded, which is Level 2 work. We tell you which you have before you buy a charger, so you are not paying for a unit the house cannot feed.
I live in an apartment. Can I still get one?
Often yes, but it is a different job. It usually means strata approval, a cable run from your own meter rather than the common supply, and agreement on how the power gets billed to you and not the building. We have done it and we can tell you early whether your building makes it straightforward or difficult, before you spend money finding out.
Can I charge off my solar?
Yes, and it is usually the cheapest power you will ever put in the car. Some chargers can be set to only draw surplus solar rather than pull from the grid. If you already have solar, or you are thinking about it, mention it when you call and we will set the two up to work together instead of separately.
Can I just use the lead that came with the car?
For the odd top up, yes. As an everyday habit it is not ideal: those leads draw a solid current for hours at a time through a general purpose powerpoint and whatever wiring sits behind it, which is exactly the arrangement that finds a weak connection. A proper charger on its own protected circuit is faster and takes that risk off the table.
